| This week's sell-off |
Down 28% in a day. Now what? |
| Intel fell 28.6% on the 30th of October. Bloomberg says it's the biggest drop in over four decades. |
| It wasn't alone. AMD lost 10.9% and Nvidia 4.2% the same day. Google fell 12.6% the day before. The S&P 500 closed the 30th down 1.82%. |
| So a lot of people are now holding something that's fallen hard. And they're all stuck on the same three questions. Do I cut it? Do I hold? Do I buy more while it's cheaper? |
| Right after a big drop is the worst time to answer them. Every option feels wrong. |
| In 1985 two economists, Hersh Shefrin and Meir Statman, gave this a name. The disposition effect. We sell winners too early and ride losers too long. It's been measured in real brokerage accounts ever since, including in the UK. |
| There's a line in our report I keep coming back to: |
It's not a loss until I sell. Yes it is. Your broker statement just hasn't caught up with your feelings. From Good at buying. Terrible at selling. |
|
| The maths doesn't care how you feel either. A 50% fall needs a 100% gain just to get back to where you started. |
| Tim and I put it all into a free report called Good at buying. Terrible at selling. It covers why we're wired this way, what the research found, four UK shares that show what it costs and how to build a selling process you'll actually follow. |
 |
|
| The shares in this email are examples, not tips. Intel might bounce. It might not. What matters is having the decision made before a day like the 30th. |
| Are you holding something that's down right now? Hit reply and tell me what you're doing with it. I read them all. |
